The Next Accepted Addiction

This will be the next “accepted” drug that many people are addicted to and/or overusing.

Coaching has brought many women into my life because they used these drugs, lost weight, then tried to come off them — and gained all the weight back.

The saddest part is that coming back from a GLP-1 weight-loss deficit is a slow, grueling process.

The main reason?

Most individuals taking these drugs are consuming 800–1,100 calories per day. At that intake, the body doesn’t just burn fat — it goes after your muscle.

And muscle is your metabolism!

Research shows that 20–40% of the weight lost on very low-calorie diets and GLP-1s can come from lean mass especially when protein intake and resistance training aren’t properly managed. Once your body starts using muscle as an energy source, your BMR drops significantly. That means you now have to keep calories extremely low just to maintain the weight loss — which is impossible long term.

Eventually, you have to come off the drug.

When that happens, hunger cues come back like a roaring lion, but now your BMR is incredibly low. Your hunger cues and your metabolism are no longer aligned.

The result?

You gain the weight back — and in many cases, more than before. Studies show that up to 70% of people regain most or all of the weight within a year after stopping GLP-1 medications.

Even more devastating is trying to lose the weight again — now with a jacked-up metabolism due to drastic muscle loss.

Clients come to me in a far worse position than they would have been prior to taking the drugs. We now have to reverse diet — meaning we intentionally bring calories up before we can drop them again. We have to rebuild muscle and restore the metabolism first.

That process is slow!

Muscle isn’t built quickly. And now they have to do this while also managing the mental and emotional issues they were numbing for months or years.

Another major issue I see:

While taking a GLP-1 there was zero internal work done around the real problem.

Why did they turn to food in the first place?

What were they trying to numb?

What hole are they trying fill?

What are they running from?

Because the truth is, you cannot fix the root problem while numbing the symptoms.

There are specific reasons for:

• food noise

• hunger dysregulation

• food addiction

• sugar addiction

And here’s what most people don’t realize:

There are natural, effective ways to increase your own GLP-1. It’s a hormone your gut already produces.

Each individual has the ability to regulate hunger cues, quiet food noise, reduce cravings, and overcome food and sugar addiction. When done correctly, you can begin shifting your own GLP-1 levels in a matter of days!

The last thing I need to address — because I’m hearing it more and more — is the growing acceptance of these drugs because they’re taken at a “micro dose.”

A small dose of something doesn’t suddenly make it okay.

Would we be okay with our kids taking a micro dose of cocaine? Meth? Or any drug for that matter?

For me personally, a micro dose of alcohol could be fatal.

“Micro-dosing” is a term that has been created to make this feel acceptable.

But the truth is, even micro doses of GLP-1 stop working over time because the body builds a tolerance — just like it does with alcohol.

So what happens?

The dose gets raised.

Then raised again.

Then raised again.

Eventually, it’s no longer a micro dose at all — and the person is maxed out at what their doctor will prescribe.

Then they’re left with two choices:

  1. Come off the drug because it’s no longer working and likely gain the weight back — or struggle daily to maintain eating 800-1200 cals a day.

  2. Get the GLP-1 from two or three different providers and take unsafe doses, which eventually stop working and is obviously harmful.

And now they’re worse off than when they started.

Yes, I’m passionate about this because this ties so much into why I got into health, wellness, and fitness.

Overcoming addiction is not easy and it breaks my heart seeing friends, loved ones, family members going down this path.

I will die on the hill I’ve been climbing and screaming to anyone that will listen.

You fix the external by going internal!

When you do the hard and intentional work around any problem the victory is one you will never stop singing.

The confidence, joy, and zest you gain from a well earned battle is your unmatched victory song that a quick fix won’t ever touch.

Don’t fall for the lie that the only way to lose weight is to take a drug or shot.

There are answers, there is help, and it is far more simple than what you could imagine.

And please for the love of God if you are a health, wellness, fitness coach, and are taking this drug and/or advising your clients to:

You are selling a lie to the American people and setting a standard that cannot be met or maintained.

We are raising a generation of young women who think their power and confidence comes from shrinking themselves to a standard that can’t be maintained, instead of building a strong body and mind that is capable, confident and has the ability to carry them through many full and joyous decades of life.
